Dahomey
The documentary film ‘Dahomey’ by Senegalese director Mati Diop is a powerful work that deals with the restitution of looted cultural property from colonial contexts. It focuses on the return of 26 royal artefacts from the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris to the Republic of Benin – once part of the Kingdom of Dahomey.

The film accompanies this historic moment not only as a political event, but also as a cultural and emotional return. It shows how young people in Benin deal with their colonial heritage, what questions they ask and what visions they develop for the future. The result is a multi-voiced portrait of a generation grappling with history, identity and justice.
