Pierre Bonnard (Vincent Macaigne) is already an established French painter when his artistic career takes a surprising turn. Marthe de Méligny (Cécile de France), who confidently presents herself as a noblewoman, enters his life and becomes his muse – an encounter that fundamentally changes Bonnard’s work. He paints her portrait again and again, eventually creating over 140 paintings and 700 drawings of Marthe. But Marthe is not content with the role of muse. She aspires to be an artist herself. Pierre finds this difficult to accept and is increasingly confronted with the question of who actually plays which role in their relationship…
